Prof Mancia
Giuseppe Mancia is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Medicine, Prevention and Applied Biotechnologies of the University of Milan-Bicocca. He is also Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the S. Gerardo Hospital, Monza, Milan. He trained at the University of Siena Medical School where he graduated in 1964. PhD in Physiology in 1970. Investigator in the National Research Council in 1965-1969. Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Milan, School of Medicine, in 1969-1973. Post-graduate Fellow of the US Public Health Service and Research Associate, Mayo Clinic and Foundation in 1972-1974. Resident in Cardiology, Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974. Associate Professor of Medicine in 1973-1985, and then Full Professor of Medicine at the University of Milan School of Medicine.
He has served as President (1988-1990) and Secretary (1984-1988) of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH). He has also served as President of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (1980-1982), Chairman of the Working Group on Hypertension and the Heart of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) (1994-1996), member of the Executive Scientific Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (1986-1991), and President of the Italian Society of Hypertension (1997-1999) He is past President of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) (1999-2001). He is member of the Executive Scientific Council of the American Society of Hypertension. He is ISH officer for the Forum of National Societies, Chairman of the WHO/ISH Liaison Committee for the Guidelines on Hypertension, and member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy of the World Heart Federation and of the Joint European Societies Committee and Task Force on Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases and Chairman of the Board of ESH for the European Hypertension Specialists. He is honorary member of the High Blood Pressure Council of Australia, the American Society of Behavioural Medicine, the Clinical Autonomic Research Society, the Turkish Society of Hypertension and Atherosclerosis, the Hungarian Society of Hypertension, and the Associazione Riva-Rocci. He has been or is member of the Editorial Board of more than 30 international Journals on Cardiology, Hypertension and Internal Medicine for which he has edited more than 60 special issues or supplements. He has been chief or associate editor of various international Hypertension Journals and is at present deputy editor of the Journal of Hypertension.
Giuseppe Mancia has received several Awards, among which the Heymans Lecture and Award of the International Society of Pharmacology, the Wright International Lecture of the High Blood Pressure Council of Australia, the International Merck Sharp & Dohme Award of the International Society of Hypertension, the Folkow Award of the European Society of Hypertension, the Spinoza Honorary Professorship of the University of Amsterdam, the Honorary Professorship of the University of Cordoba and the Life Achievement Award of the Italian Society of Hypertension. He was appointed Lecturer of the Year by the Belgian Universities and Hypertension Leagues (1992) and Honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Cordoba. He was conferred the International Recordati Prize and the Invernizzi Award in 2001.
He has been invited to give state-of-the-art, keynote, or special lectures at more than 200 International Meetings. He has also been guest lecturer at meetings of many national Societies of Hypertension, Cardiology and Internal Medicine.
Giuseppe Mancia’s research interests are pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of hypertension, heart failure, coronary and other cardiovascular diseases. His expertise includes ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, neural control of the circulation, large artery mechanics and clinical trials. He has edited several books on hypertension and has published more than 700 original papers, reviews and editorials in peer-review journals and books.
